RationalWiki is a website that was established in 2007 and is run by the RationalMedia Foundation. This website is full of great information, but the reader has to be careful on what information they read because even though this website is overseen by a foundation, regular people can post on it. According to this article a Republic is defined as a form of government that is run by laws, rather than heredity. Running by heredity means that there is usually a monarch or king, etc. that is passed on and can basically make their own rules. A Republic is normally run by a constitution (constitutional republics) or by a person or group of people (democratic republics) that is elected by the citizens of that country. The United States form of government is a Republic and it is typically split into two major parties: democratic and republican. A republic is described as being a form of government where the power lies within the people to pick and vote for people who will represent them. A democracy is classified as being a form of government where the people are “exercised” through elected officials. The United States practice both of these. Republics are usually headed by a “President,” which is the main representative of the people.

Live Science is a reliable source of information because it was originated in 2004 with just three people behind it and has now grown to have over a dozen members and reaches thousands of readers. They are run by many accredited editors and reporters. They also provide an email for readers to reach out to if they have any questions, which I feel shows that they are very serious and helpful when it comes to their work. The author of this piece, Remy Melina, holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Hofstra University and has been working for Live Science for 2 years, before this was published. Melina defines a Republic as a form of government where an elected group of representatives (not the actual people of the country) are in charge of legislation and decisions. The people of the country are the ones that elect the officials, by voting.

Dictionary.com is a very reliable source because it has been around since 1995 and it is the “world’s leading digital dictionary.” This website actually has around 70 million monthly users and 5.5 billion word searches each year. Dictionary.com defines a republic as “a form of government in which the people or their elected representatives process the supreme power.” They also define it as “a constitutional form in which the head of state is an elected or nominated president,” which is what the United States practices. They basically state that it is a form of government where the people nominate officials who will hold the power for them. This website also points out that the words republic and democracy are interchangeable.
Munro, Andre. “Republic Government,” Encyclopedia Britannica, N.d.,

Encyclopedia Britannica is a reliable source because it is a renowned digital encyclopedia that people have been using for years. It is headed by many professionals and each one is described, in detail, under their “executive team” tab. According to this website, a republic is a government that is run by representatives of the people of that specific country. They actually state that a republic is any type of government in which there isn’t a hereditary monarch as the head of state. This may be different from all of the other websites because this author may have done different types of research and viewed it in a different way which applies to the idea.
