Examples of Republic
A Republic is a form of government where the people of a specific country vote and elect officials to represent them and consider all of their opinions and needs in legislation. A very simple example of this form of government is the United States (Volokh, Eugene). Here in the U.S. we have a republic form of government because the people elect a President to represent the nation. U.S. citizens also vote for many other government officials such as mayors, senators, and many more. There are many other countries that are considered a republic and are actually headed by a President, like the U.S. is: Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and many others (“List of countries by system of government”). A republic doesn’t have to only be headed by a President however, it just has to be a form of government where the people elect whatever type of officials they have. For example, a country can be governed by a ministry group or any other group of people, as long as the citizens elected them.
There are also many fictional examples of a republic government, which is sometimes a little bit easier to understand because they are explained in a simpler way. Olympus has Fallen is a movie that most people are familiar with and it deals with a terrorist attack on the White House (“Olympus Has Fallen”). This depicts a republic government because the white house is where the President of the U.S. resides and it is under attack in the movie. There is also a novel written by Stephen King, titled 11/22/63, this novel is about a man who is traveling back in time to try to avoid the assassination of the U.S. President, John F. Kennedy (Book Rags). It mainly focuses on saving the President from the actual day of the assassination, which relates to a republic because some are headed by a President (like the U.S.) who was voted on and elected by the citizens of that country.
